This book is full of fascinating ideas, and the author’s enthusiasm for these ideas is very apparent (lots of explanation points). However, the author is not particularly good at explaining these ideas. I have a master’s degree in engineering and a PhD in neuroscience, and I had a difficult time following some of the more technical arguments. I was also a little bit disturbed to read the way he describes his research “subjects,” as if they are also enthusiastic about the research, and willing participants in the studies. No, they are captive animals with chronically implanted electrodes, kept in cages, deprived of food and water so that they will “work” for juice rewards and grapes. It surprises me that someone who holds biological life in such high esteem can treat other animals as disposable tools without feelings and without the capacity to suffer.
